Parents -
I'm guessing that you have been worrying about your child since they were born. And the fact that you are checking out this page means that you deeply care for your child. Take a deep breath before reading any more and remind yourself that you are doing the best you can.
I am passionate about working with children and relating with children comes naturally to me.
Establishing a working relationship with your child will be the foundation of our work together. I have educational training and clinical preparation that focuses specifically on working with children. I seek out ways to keep current on the cultural and therapeutic dimensions of childhood and this information helps me in connecting with you child.
Childhood is a time of exploration, play and creativity. Often times there are things though that get in the way of children being able to fully enjoy and embrace this developmental stage. There are many struggles that children face today whether it's managing their emotions, understanding social situations & making friends, grieving a loss of a death, move, or a life change or struggling with ADHD.
In my sessions with children, I utilize play and skill building. This can include toys, games, art supplies, and books. It takes time for children to discover and appropriately utilize an emotional vocabulary. Children are resilient and possess innate skills to work through their struggles. I will provide a safe space for your child to work out his or her struggles through play and to unlock those innate skills. Some of the skills we may work on include emotion regulation, problem solving, frustration tolerance and social skills. I include parents in my work and have the child teach skills they learned in session to their parents.
For children ages 11 and younger, I first meet with the parents to get a family history and an overview of the current situation. Please bring the professional disclosure and child intake history forms found on the Forms page with you to the initial session.
Adolescence can be a challenging and stressful time as there are so many changes and responsibilities and things to juggle. Whether it’s drama with friends, communicating with parents, figuring out your identity, managing your emotions, or a combination of these topics, these struggles can be tackled in counseling. Often teens discover that being an adolescent brings new problems, more responsibilities and more questions on how to handle it all. Counseling can be a place to learn coping skills and to build your inner strength to manage this life transition.
An important task for adolescents is to discover their identity and they often define themselves by their friend group and interests. This is a time in their life to figure out who they are outside of the voices of friends, the media, and those around them. My goal is to help them navigate this rocky time of life with a trusted adult. Trust is the key to working with adolescents and allows them to thrive in therapy.
Thank you for taking the time out of your day to explore what I can provide for you. I value your courage to begin the process of healing hurts. In counseling I will offer insight to your struggles and we will also create an environment that will provide you an opportunity to process, to be heard, and to seek growth. Our counseling relationship will also offer you space to recognize how you interact with others. My goal is that you will be encouraged from our time together and feel empowered to integrate what you gain by making positive changes in your life.
I desire to meet my clients where they are at and help them to keep moving forward. In our time together, we will work to see what is hindering growth and how we can work together to help you to continue to thrive. My hope is to encourage you in your strengths, challenge you to see a new perspective and understand who you were made you to be.
My goals during counseling are to help you gain self-awareness, to provide insight on your current situation, and to assist in developing self-care skills. I believe that having a variety of tools will help you to handle future situations in a healthy way. Sessions are tailored to each client and what he or she brings to the session.
Parenting is probably the hardest job you will ever have. In my work with children, I have learned about child development and how to work with them. I often think of myself as a child translator helping parents to know how to work with their child at a developmentally appropriate level. I enjoy providing support to parents.
In my work with parents, I focus on teaching methods that involve coaching and modeling for your child rather than just talking to them. If you feel like your parenting is not going the way you want it to, we can work together to make it more effective.
Here are some topics that can be covered in parenting support sessions:
working on a child’s difficult behavior
creating a routine to get homework or chores accomplished
supporting a highly emotional child
creating a plan for how to be a parenting team
helping a child with their negative mindset
managing your own anxiety while parenting an anxious child
focusing on problem solving in your parenting
